Two bits of comic book movie news
In case you hadn't heard, there's been some news . . .
1) Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other way-cool TV properties, will be writing and directing the big screen adaptation of Wonder Woman. No word yet on the casting (though Whedon might be leaning toward some actress from his space TV show Firefly), but the star-spangled Amazon is indeed headed to theaters.
It's taken a long time for the Queen of All Super-Heroines to make it to this level, in part because her origins, costume, powers, and villains are pretty hard to take seriously.
You know, she was molded out of clay by her mother, Queen of the Amazons. She wears a bathing suit and wrist bands that deflect bullets. There's the lasso that makes people tell the truth. There's the invisible plane. And so on.
Her villains include Ares, God of War; the Cheetah, who's like Catwoman only meaner; Dr. Psycho, a midget with curly hair; the Duke of Deception, about whom I know absolutely nothing; and those are the big ones.

2) Thomas Haden Church, of Sideways fame, will be appearing as the primary villain in Spider-man 3. No word yet on what villain he'll play, although the word on the street is that he'll be Venom . . . a guy in a black Spider-suit with a long tongue and a mad-on for our hero.

Best rear window decal ever!
During the visit from Reggie and Sarah to rainy SoCal, we did - at the very least - see the best-ever auto accoutrement.
On an otherwise nondescript Mazda four-door, there was a back window decal of a little girl in pigtails delivering the following message:
"FUCK ALL RAIDER HATERS!"
A little web research also reveals that this slogan is available on T-shirts. For children aged 3 to 9.
Seriously.

Out-of-towners = Rainy Southern California
It's possible that it's just us.
This winter, California has experienced its rainy winter since the 1880s. The upside of this is that it may well take another 120 or so years for it to be this rainy again.
The downside of this is that the sun goes away, as if in spite, whenever my lovely bride and I have out-of-town guests in LA. A few weeks ago, it was the mother-in-law. She was here for 6 days. It rained for all of them. Whoever heard of not being able to go outside in Southern Cali?
Apparently, those who know Stephanie and Chris Wieland.
This past weekend, Reggie Newton and Sarah Finch popped for the last leg of their West Coast trip. Don't get me wrong - we had a great time (thanks in advance for moving to LA, Newton-Finches!). We ate and drank, went to a couple of parties, watched some great basketball, and so on.
The sun was out for approximately four daylight hours during their time here. It was, however, extremely clear on the second night.
So anyway, another set of Chicago friends arrive in LA today to hang out, go drinking, etc. And what do Brian Sharpe and Kelsey MacLachlan have to look forward to?
Partly cloudy with showers in the afternoon.

People say that you can come to LA, and six months later, you're a star.
While this might or might not be true, my wife is having her Andy Warhol-esque 15 mintues of fame this week. Stephanie was quoted and photographed for the front page of the LA Times California section this past Sunday. You can read the story here:

You might be able to figure out how to see the photo, too. It's a cute shot, despite her protests.
The real irony, of course, is that Steph's appearance in the article is due to her work at Kaplan Test Prep, a job she'll be leaving in May. That's right. It seems that she's been hired to direct two productions with the Florida-based Lovewell Institute of the Arts over the course of the summer. Every year, Lovewell brings together a collection of kids and teens. When they arrive at Lovewell, they've got nothing. By the end of the four weeks, they've written, produced, and performed in an original musical. The kids write the songs from scratch, they write the book from scratch, and so on.
Steph loves working with kids and teens. It's been the best part of her job at Kaplan, and it's been what she's enjoyed most when we worked at Scrap Mettle SOUL and when she did Lovewell last year.
Steph will be assistant directing the production for 13 to 18 year olds, and then she'll be directing a younger group of kids immediately after. She'll spend 8 weeks in Florida - meaning that Our Man in LA will likely spend hours upon hours drinking beer and playing video games.
But let's here it for the girl, here! Steph and I can't wait for this next step.

Oh yeah, upper 60s and sunny with a light haze in LA today.
